So, as of day 5, Ambulance (our caterpillar) is still around. (as you may note, i have been pretty traumatized by the untimely demise of caterpillar 1). Yesterday after re-reading Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar, I tried to introduce the twins to Carle’s art in the book. We looked at how he had used painting and collage to create the art and illustrations for the book. Then i used some of the kids’ earlier painting and cut them up in different shapes (circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. I wanted to do a sticking activity but the boys wanted to paint as well so we tried to combine the two. The kids enjoyed sticking (though they collaborated on an unnecessary project in the process – they completely destroyed the ‘mess free’ glue stick i was using). They made a caterpillar which was a guided activity and they also used the shapes to stick onto the painted papers. At this point it was purely sticking with no attempts are designs or forms. I could get them to create forms with the pieces but i wanted them to just explore sticking/pasting. This is something i don’t end up doing that much so i am going to make a conscious effort to do more pasting with them. I was thinking of just folding card paper to make greeting cards and have them stick the papers on it to make cards. Will post pics of how that turns out soon.
